Helpful information for parents regarding COVID-19

The outbreak and spread of Coronavirus (Covid -19) has impacted each and every one of us. It is 100% normal, natural and predictable for people to feel uncomfortable in this situation. It is harder to live our lives with a heightened level of worry and uncertainty. It can be confusing to navigate so much information from schools, media and the like. We, as parents, have the challenge of helping our children to navigate through this time as well. It can be empowering to stay informed and know what is helpful to say so that children feel safe and comforted.

Please also remember feelings of anxiety can have a rapid ripple effect. Your children may pick up on your anxiety and the fear, stress and uncertainty around them. Make sure that you are looking after your own physical & mental health.

Things you can do to support yourself

  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
  • Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep.
  • Make time to unwind. Try to keep your mind busy with activities you enjoy.
  • Have a laugh with your children. It may not feel the right time, but is so important for connection and health.
  • Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.
