Supporting Your Child in Their Daily Life
Aiming to discover their skills, support needs, and emotional development.
Some children have a way of thinking, learning and seeing the world that is different from their peers. A giftedness assessment can help build a clearer understanding of your child’s cognitive strengths, how they learn best, and the ways in which their abilities may shape their experiences at home and at school.
At TT Psychology, we take a thoughtful and individualised approach to assessment. We take the time to understand your child as a whole person, including their strengths, challenges, interests and individual way of experiencing the world. Our psychologists use a warm, neuroaffirming approach and work closely with parents to make sense of the assessment findings and consider practical ways to support your child’s learning, wellbeing and development.
Who is a Giftedness Assessment For?
You may consider a giftedness assessment if your child:
- Learns quickly or seeks more challenging work
- Uses advanced vocabulary or shows strong reasoning skills
- Seems bored, frustrated, or under-stimulated at school
- May benefit from gifted and talented programs
- Has abilities that are not reflected in their school performance
- Has ADHD, autism, or learning difficulties alongside areas of high ability
- Has completed previous assessments that have left you with questions

The Potential Benefits of a Giftedness Assessment
Knowing more about the way your child thinks and learns may make it easier to understand what they need to thrive.
A giftedness assessment may help you:
- Identify your child’s cognitive strengths and abilities
- Better understand their individual learning profile
- Recognise areas where they may need extra support
- Explore suitable extension, enrichment, or gifted programs
- Has abilities that are not reflected in their school performance
- Give teachers helpful insight into their learning needs
- Better understand twice exceptional children
- Feel more comfortable about the next steps
What Does a Giftedness Assessment Involve?
Initial Appointment
Your first session is a chance to talk openly about your child’s development, learning, strengths, and any questions or concerns you have. We consider relevant information such as school reports and previous assessments to better understand your child and their experiences.
Assessment Confirmation
After the initial appointment, we’ll confirm the assessments required and provide a clear estimate of the total fees. The assessment fee includes all appointments and the preparation of the final report.
Assessment Appointments
Your child will complete one or more age-appropriate assessments that explore areas including reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. We look at the assessment findings in the context of your child as a whole, rather than viewing their scores in isolation. Online questionnaires may also be provided for parents and teachers, helping us understand your child’s experiences, behaviours and abilities.
Feedback Appointment
We give you a comprehensive written report explaining your child’s cognitive profile, strengths, and practical recommendations. During your feedback session, we explain the findings clearly, answer your questions, and talk through what the next steps could look like.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intellectual Giftedness
What is a giftedness assessment?
This is a psychological assessment that explores your child’s cognitive abilities and helps build a clearer picture of their intellectual strengths and learning needs.
What are some signs of giftedness?
While every child is different, many gifted children may show advanced vocabulary, quick learning, strong reasoning, creativity, intense curiosity, or a desire for more challenging work.
What tests do you use?
Depending on your child’s age, your psychologist may use a cognitive assessment such as the WPPSI-IV or WISC-V.
Can my child be gifted and have ADHD or autism?
Yes, absolutely. Some gifted children also have ADHD, autism, or learning difficulties. These children are sometimes described as ‘twice exceptional’.
Can the assessment help them at school?
In many cases, yes, one of the things a giftedness assessment aims to do is provide information to their school. The findings often give parents, teachers, and other educators helpful information about your child’s abilities and learning needs, which may help them access appropriate support.
Will we receive a written report?
Yes, you will receive a comprehensive written report explaining what we discovered during the assessment and our practical recommendations.
Is a giftedness assessment the same as an educational assessment?
A giftedness assessment focuses on your child’s cognitive abilities and intellectual strengths. If you’re considering an educational assessment in Melbourne, your psychologist can help you understand which type of assessment may best suit your child’s needs.
